There is no page one in ChatGPT. It writes one answer and names a few sources — usually three to five — so "ranking" really means becoming one of them. For a small Indian business, that happens when three things are true: ChatGPT's crawlers can reach your site, your pages answer a buyer's exact question in the first few sentences, and other sites mention your business by name.
That is the whole job. Everything else people sell you about "AI search optimization" is either a version of those three, or noise.
Why "how to rank on ChatGPT" is the wrong question
I build websites for small businesses in Chennai and elsewhere in India, and this question comes up in almost every call now. The honest first answer is that ChatGPT has no leaderboard. Ask the same question five times and you can get five different answers, sometimes naming different businesses.
What you are actually competing for is inclusion. When a buyer types "who can build a Next.js website for a D2C brand in Coimbatore" or "best GST consultant for a small textile unit in Tirupur", ChatGPT retrieves a few live pages, reads them, and quotes or names what it trusts. Your job is to be in that small set.
Two separate machines decide this, and they move at different speeds:
- Live search. ChatGPT fetches current web pages at the moment someone asks. This is fast. A page you publish and get indexed this week can appear in answers next week.
- Training memory. What the model "already knows" about your brand from its training corpus. This is slow. It only refreshes when OpenAI ships a new model, and it is built almost entirely from what other people wrote about you.
Most guides mix the two together and then promise six-week results. Treat them separately and the plan gets simple.
Step one: make sure ChatGPT can actually fetch your site
This is the cheapest step and the one most sites get wrong. OpenAI runs three crawlers with three different jobs:
- OAI-SearchBot — indexes pages for ChatGPT's search answers. This is the one that matters for citations.
- GPTBot — collects content for model training. Blocking it does not remove you from search answers.
- ChatGPT-User — fetches a page when a user's request needs it.
Open your robots.txt. If it blocks OAI-SearchBot, you have opted out of being cited and no amount of content will fix that. OpenAI has said a robots.txt change takes about 24 hours to register, so this is the one lever with same-week feedback.
Then check your firewall and CDN rules, not just robots.txt. I have seen Cloudflare and AWS WAF rules hand OpenAI's agents a 429 or a JS challenge, and the crawler simply gives up. If your site is behind a bot-protection layer, verify that legitimate AI crawlers get a real 200 response and not a challenge page.
Finally, make sure the text is in the HTML. If your services and pricing only appear after JavaScript runs, some AI crawlers will never see them. Static, server-rendered pages do better here — one reason I lean on Next.js with real server rendering rather than a fully client-side app.
Bing matters more than most Indian businesses assume, because ChatGPT's live search has leaned heavily on Bing's index since launch. If you have never submitted your site to Bing Webmaster Tools, do that today. Ranking on Google but being invisible on Bing is a common Indian small-business blind spot.
Step two: put the answer in the first 40 to 80 words
Models do not read your page like a person. They chunk it and pull passages they can quote cleanly. So the passage has to stand alone.
Write each important page like this: a question-shaped heading, then two to four sentences that fully answer it, naming the subject explicitly. Then expand with detail. Not "as we saw above", not "it depends on your needs" — a plain, complete answer.
Two examples from work I have done:
- Bad: "Choosing the right website partner is a crucial decision for any growing business..." (paragraph four finally says the price)
- Good: "A business website for a small Indian company typically costs Rs 25,000 to Rs 80,000 when built by a freelancer, and Rs 1.2 lakh onwards through an agency. The gap is mostly process overhead, not code quality."
The second version is the one that gets lifted into an answer, because it is already an answer.
Academic work backs this up. The Princeton "GEO" paper by Aggarwal and co-authors (2024) tested ways to lift visibility in generative engines and found that adding real citations and concrete statistics was among the biggest movers, on the order of a 30-40% improvement. Vague, adjective-heavy copy loses.
Related: I have written before about why your website is not showing on Google — that checklist overlaps a lot with this one.
Step three: mentions elsewhere carry more weight than backlinks
This is the part that surprises people who grew up on classic SEO. For AI answers, being *talked about* matters more than being linked to.
Ahrefs measured this across 75,000 brands and found branded web mentions correlated with AI visibility at 0.664, while link metrics showed weak correlation. Ahrefs also tracked ChatGPT's most-cited domains from millions of AI responses: Reddit far ahead with 847,338 mentions, Wikipedia next at 431,710, then Amazon at 97,457.
But do not take that as a licence to go spam Reddit today. Reality shifted mid-2026. Data from the AI visibility platform PromptWatch, reported by Cybernews in September 2026, showed Reddit's share of ChatGPT citations collapsing by about 86% between June and mid-August, dropping from roughly 3.8% to 0.5% of citations, with no announcement from OpenAI. That is the actual lesson: the citation mix is volatile and platform-specific, so building your whole strategy around one site is fragile.
What stays stable is being genuinely described, consistently and accurately, in several places that have nothing to do with you. For an Indian small business, the realistic list is short:
- Google Business Profile — fully filled, correct category, real photos, and a habit of asking happy customers for reviews.
- Justdial, IndiaMART, Sulekha or your trade directory, with the exact same business name, phone number and address everywhere. Mismatched details make an AI unsure whether you are one business or three.
- Your own LinkedIn page and that of the founder, describing the same category of work in the same words.
- Quora and relevant subreddits where your buyers ask. SE Ranking's analysis found a clear relationship between brand mentions on Quora and the number of ChatGPT citations a site earns — from about 1.7 citations at minimal presence to 7 at heavy presence. Answer properly, do not paste your brochure.
One more number worth knowing: Ahrefs found roughly 44% of the pages ChatGPT cites are listicles. "Best [category] in [city]" style roundups written by someone else are disproportionately valuable, so pitch yourself into the ones that already exist in your category instead of writing your own.
What to do this month, if you have limited time
If you are a small business owner with maybe ten hours to spare, do these in order:
- Fix robots.txt and your WAF so
OAI-SearchBotandChatGPT-Userget a clean 200. - Submit the site to Bing Webmaster Tools and confirm key pages are indexed.
- Rewrite your three most important pages — home, services, pricing — so each opens with a two-to-four sentence direct answer.
- Add an FAQ block with the questions customers actually ask on the phone, answered in full sentences.
- Make your name, address and phone number identical across your site, Google Business Profile and every directory listing.
- Run ten buyer questions through ChatGPT yourself, once a month, and note whether you are named. That log is your only real measurement.
Then be patient. Expect weeks for live-search citations and months for anything in the model's memory.
What to ignore
- Anyone guaranteeing "position one in ChatGPT." There is no such thing. There is no paid placement either.
- llms.txt as a silver bullet. It is a reasonable idea and harmless to add, but there is no evidence it drives citations in ChatGPT today. Priorities first.
- Publishing daily "best tools" listicles about your own business. Self-written rankings do not fool models that cross-check against independent sources.
- Panicking over every citation study. The Reddit collapse above is a good example of why you should build the boring foundations — crawlable site, clear answers, consistent details, real reviews — rather than whichever tactic is trending this quarter.
This overlaps with what I have said about Cloudflare's AI crawler defaults and Google's preferred sources feature: the technical layer is small, and most of the outcome comes from being genuinely useful and clearly described.
If you would rather have someone go through your site and fix the retrieval layer properly, that is what I do — and you can see recent work here or hire me for a short project.
Frequently asked questions
Can I rank number one in ChatGPT? No. ChatGPT does not have a results page or a fixed position one. It writes a single answer and cites a handful of sources, usually three to five. What you can improve is how often your business is named or quoted across the questions your customers actually ask, which people in the industry track as "mention rate" rather than rank.
How long does it take to show up in ChatGPT answers? If your page is crawlable and answers a question cleanly, ChatGPT's live search can pick it up within days to a few weeks, because it fetches pages at query time. The slower part is the model's memory from training data, which only refreshes when a new model ships and depends on third-party mentions you cannot rush. Expect weeks for the fast surface and months for the slow one.
Is ChatGPT SEO different from Google SEO? They overlap but the weights differ. Google rewards a well-linked, well-ranked page. ChatGPT cares more about whether a passage is quotable on its own, whether your business details are consistent across the web, and whether independent sites mention you. An Ahrefs analysis of 15,000 prompts found only around 12% of the URLs ChatGPT, Gemini and Copilot cited also ranked in Google's top 10 for the same question, which is why good Google rankings alone do not guarantee citations.
Does paying an AEO or GEO agency guarantee I get cited in ChatGPT? No. There is no paid placement inside ChatGPT answers, and nobody can promise a citation. Any agency guaranteeing a "top position in ChatGPT" is selling something that does not exist. The real work is technical access, answer-first content and honest mentions elsewhere, all of which a small business can do without a retainer.
Do I need llms.txt to be cited by ChatGPT? No. OpenAI has not stated that it reads llms.txt for search answers, and there is no evidence it moves citations. It is harmless to add one, but your time is far better spent on robots.txt access for OAI-SearchBot, a Bing-visible site and answer-first pages. Skip it if you have limited hours.
